The Lumberjack - NAU's student-run newspaper
The Lumberjack is the student voice of Northern Arizona University and has been since it was founded in 1914. Today, The Lumberjack is a 24/7 news operation staffed entirely by students who contribute to all aspects of the publication’s workflow while receiving class credit toward graduation and developing skills that professional media platforms look for in journalists. Students brainstorm stories, plan, report, write, edit, photograph, illustrate and design the weekly publication while receiving input and guidance from a full-time faculty advisor with decades of professional newsroom experience. The Lumberjack’s website provides a platform for breaking news, updates on previous stories, multimedia projects and digital journalism, while the publication’s student-run social media team constantly engages with readers.
Why we need your support
Along with publishing daily on JackCentral.org, The Lumberjack prints two special editions of our newspaper each semester. With the help of our amazing team, we distribute these print editions to newsstands all over the NAU campus and at some off-campus locations around Flagstaff. This semester, The Lumberjack is working toward printing a magazine for our second printed issue! This magazine will have a Behind-The-Scenes theme, featuring the people whose work is often overlooked and not typically seen in the spotlight. Funds from this campaign will go toward the printing costs needed to distribute copies of this issue to our readers.
Why a magazine?
The Lumberjack stopped printing its weekly editions when COVID-19 hit in the Spring 2020 semester. Since then, our print issues have taken many forms. From publishing weekly issues exclusively online to getting the go-ahead to print one special issue in 2022, we now print special newspaper issues twice a semester.
Transitioning to a magazine, we aim to attract a wider audience to print media by showcasing our stories in a more creative format than what is usually seen in our newspaper. This includes more space for design and utilizing a more cohesive blend of photos and illustrations in our storytelling.
Your Impact
Your contribution to this new magazine would greatly benefit our team of student editors, writers, photographers and illustrators. We have been hard at work planning a product our readers and ourselves would be proud of. Thank you again for your endless support, and we hope you can pick up a copy of our magazine soon!
