ASCE Concrete Canoe

Your gift helps Civil Engineering students build a canoe

Due to COVID-19 the Pacific Southwest Conference will be held virtually.

The NAU student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers is ready to start designing their concrete canoe! As a team, we will design a concrete canoe to compete against other colleges in the annual Concrete Canoe Competition, taking place at the Pacific Southwest Conference in March 2021.

Designing a concrete canoe for competition requires teamwork and patience. As a team, we gain hands-on, real world experience through trial and error. It takes leadership and persistence to create the desired concrete mix for our canoe. We each play an important role: Marie is the project manager, Russell is the mix design captain, Scott is the structural design captain, Kyle is the hull design captain, and Ryan manages quality control.

2021 Concrete Canoe Budget

We need your support to help cover the costs to design our canoe and support our mentee program development. With multiple concrete mix trials, we need a lot of materials to test and perfect our mix. These materials helps us to create the mix to make the best concrete possible. We are working throughout the fall semester to prepare our team for competition.

Your gift allows students to participate in the Pacific Southwest Conference.

In the spring, we will compete in the Pacific Southwest Conference. This competition helps us build our team bond and allows us to really test our design against 18 other college teams. We are ranked in three different categories: technical proposal, technical presentation, and enhanced focus areas report. The conference also connects us with other aspiring civil engineers and encourages us to network with our peers. Your support will help cover mix design costs, conference registration, and new equipment for future canoe teams to benefit from.
